The new version is very good, if different from this one. The Oompa Loompas aren't orange with green hair, for starters. (Apparently they weren't in the book either, but it was changed in the film so it "wouldn't be racist".) Johnny Depp's Wonka has more in common with Michael Jackson than Gene Wilder and it's brilliant in its own little way. Then again, my childhood memories were all about the book and not the film, so I guess that helps. :)

Gene Wilder in general, though, is absolutely amazing. Makes me want to re-watch all those Mel Brooks films.

It's the smile, guys, they are the same. At least for me that's where the resemblence ends. Having recently seen, however, Daniel Ratcliff's 'Lady in Black' I am certain Daniel will within 5 years grow into his face and become a very handsome man. For those of you old enough to remember Alan Ladd (a '50's hottie) he was a very short man (oh, and so is Tom Cruise) and it did not seem to hinder him much...see the movie 'Shane'. Edward Fairfax Rochester for me! I've tried to read Wuthering Heights numerous times but I could never finish it because it is so depressing and I dislike the characters. Heathcliff is a mad man and he is horrible to everyone. At least Edward, despite all his flaws loves Jane for who she is and he is deeply passionate and romantic. Love him.

Wow, a classic film of my childhood. I haven't even see the remake because I have this version in such wonderful memory. Gene Wilder is stunning. The destruction of the spoiled children is so wonderfully, wonderfully chilling. And from today's perspective, it was such an edgy children's film. Love, love, love.

This BBC adaptation shown in Autumn 2006 is my favourite and it is brilliant! Ruth Wilson is wonderful as Jane Eyre, Ruth brings Jane to life through her facial expressions, one minute she can be sad and lonely, the next look beautiful and happy. Ruth plays Jane as I imagine her in the book and brings a freshness to Jane which no other actress has done before.

Toby Stephens is fantastic as Edward Fairfax Rochester. Toby plays Rochester with the right amount of darkness, humour and tenderness as was just right for the character. Toby also looks right to play Rochester as well. I also love the chemistry between Ruth and Toby!I have read and watched Jane Eyre so many times I know it off by heart, I watch it when I am in pain, feeling sad or when I need a Rochester fix! It is my comfort DVD.

Magwitch was blindly gratful to the innocent boy he first met ( like a father loving his son regardless of character) and yes, Pip was callously ungtrateful. but that can be blamed on youthful ignorance i think (which is why he became a "toff" in the first place). his character would have had no hope without this metamorphasis. as you can see - i'm grabbalicious for good endings.

hi Traxy, i had completely agreed with you about Pip, even thought that he was uglybecause i so hated him.
i suppose this "toff" means prejudiced and ungrateful? - that's what almost made the end of the movie for me - but i persevered and was rewarded with 'Great Expectations'. this is my take on it - a young and innocent boy hungry for love and approval (like all kids of all times) is exposed to a twisted (in more ways than one) woman and attractive adpted daughter. he is bewildered into accepting her beliefs as wisdom and with non the shinier to look up to becomes a "toff". but later, with the exposure to good people/friends begin to learn/mature and become a better/selfless person - a pretty good movie i think. loved Magwitch.
